Acomplia (Rimonabant, Slimona) 14 x 20mg
Rimonabant is a drug used to treat overweight people with initial BMI of >= 30 Kg/m2 or overweight people with BMI of 27 or higher with medical risk factors like high BP, diabetes and high cholesterol. It should be used in combination with a reduced calorie diet and an exercise programme.
Rimonabant can also help redunce tobacco dependcy in smokers, helping people to quit smoking.
Rimonabant tablet should be taken once a day, in the morning before breakfast. Do not take dosage more than your doctor has prescribed.
Rimonabant is the first selective CB1 receptor blocker to be approved for use anywhere in the world. In Europe, it is indicated for use in conjunction with diet and exercise for patients with a body mass index greater than 30 kg/m, or patients wih a BMI greater than 27 kg/m with associated risk factors, such as type 2 diabetes or dyslipidaemia. In the UK, it has been available since the end of July 2006.
Rimonabant acts by selectively blocking CB1 receptors found in the brain and in peripheral organs important in glucose and lipid (or fat) metabolism, including adipose tissue, the liver, gastrointestinal tract and muscle(1). CB1 receptor blockade with Generic Acomplia acts to decrease the overactivity of the endocannabinoid system (EC system)(2,3). The EC system is a recently characterised physiological system that includes receptors such as the CB1 receptor and it has been shown to play an important role in regulating body weight and in controlling energy balance, as well as glucose and lipid (or fat) metabolism. In simple terms it acts as an appetite suppressant. It curbs the normal appetite and urge to consume tobacco making you eat and smoke less.
Rimonabant may also be found to be effective in assisting some smokers to quit smoking. Sanofi-Aventis is currently conducting studies to determine the possible value of rimonabant in smoking-cessation therapy. The Studies with Rimonabant and Tobacco Use (STRATUS) Program involves more than 6,000 subjects. STRATUS is designed to explore two smoking-related therapies. First, to use rimonabant directly to aid in smoking cessation. Second, to help prevent weight gain in former smokers. Initial results apparently suggest that rimonabant is effective for both uses. However, the FDA has explicitly stated to Sanofi-Aventis that without additional studies rimonabant cannot be approved in the United States for smoking cessation therapy.
Before taking any prescription medicine, it is important that you consult your doctor!
