Autism Sensory Learning
Dyslexia is often in the news right now, but it’s often misunderstood, difficult to diagnose and those affected by it often don’t get adequate support. So what is it and how does it affect children and adults? Would you recognise dyslexia symptoms in your family?
The word dyslexia comes from the Greek, literally meaning “difficulty with words”. The condition can affect spelling and reading and many people believe that is all it is. But it can also affect individuals in other areas, such as confusing dates and times, confusing left and right, difficulties getting ideas down on paper, sequencing numbers and information and following verbal instructions. Working memory is often also poor. This shows itself when new information needs to be processed effectively and quickly.
Dyslexia is viewed as a learning disability in law. However it can also be seen as a gift. Some talents shared by people with dyslexia include the ability to think visually, being creative and intuitive, being practical with their hands. They are often highly aware of their surroundings and have great imaginations. Dyslexic children often have above average intelligence, yet they can struggle with processing words and new information.
The exact percentage of the population is debated, but it is generally thought to affect between 8% and 15% of the population, 4% severely. That means that in a class of 30 children, 3 are likely to have dyslexic symptoms, maybe mild or possibly severe. Yet few of those will have undergone a dyslexia test. So everyone is likely to know at least one child or adult who is dyslexic. Yet children rarely have a dyslexia test unless their problems are severe.
Children with dyslexia are likely to have dufficulty with normal teaching methods and often benefit from one-to-one, multi-sensory learning environments. Dyslexia often runs in families, with a relatives having problems with it too. Most are born with it and don’t outgrow it, though learn ways to deal with it. It isn’t directly linked to intelligence. Children and adults with other learning difficulties, such as autism or ADHD, or sensory dufficulties may have dyslexia symptoms, also. If unsure, you can find a dyslexia test online.
