Learning French grammar has always been a chore, but language is grammar. It comes as a relief, therefore, that the French audio course of the late Michel Thomas takes the tedium out of it altogether. Michel Thomas, a polyglot who taught several languages over nearly sixty years, late in life committed his unique method to audio recording. His French audio lessons cannot be bettered for anyone who wants to learn French fast.

Who was Michel Thomas?

Michel Thomas was Jewish. Born Moniek Kroskov in Lodz, Poland in 1914, he moved to Germany as a boy. Alarmed by the rise of the Nazis, he went to study in France in 1933, then Austria in 1938. When Austria joined Hitler’s Germany in Anschluss later that year, he fled the country.

He was back in France when the Nazis invaded, and according to his autobiography Test of Courage [Free Press, 2000], he had the most spectacularly adventurous war. Fighting with the Resistance under the name Michel Thomas, he made several miraculous escapes from concentration and slave labour camps. When the war ended, by which time he was in American uniform, he became a brilliant and indefatigable Nazi-hunter.
