Babies, toddlers and young children love books that show pictures of things they recognize. That is one reason toddlers usually love catalogs. A book that is about a child and his or her interests encourages engagement with both pictures and text. Modern technology makes it easy to make homemade books really personal.

Homemade Books for Toddlers Need Pictures

Many families already have family photographs on their computers; if not, it is easy to find photographs or clip art on the Internet and save them to a computer. To make it easy to find the pictures again, save them to a folder with a memorable name such as "Tom's book." Copyright is not an issue if the work is not intended to be shown in public or to be sold.

Parents who have a digital camera can have fun taking pictures of family members, their child, family pets and familiar objects such as their child's favorite toys. If the child has a particular interest such as Lego, dinosaurs or trains, the picture can show models he made or will enjoy and can identify, or pictures taken at a museum or on a trip. One big photograph to a page is enough.
