Learning Finnish In Finland

In the Thousand Lakes area of Finland, thick forests of spruce and silver birch stretch for mile upon mile around the lakes which are dotted with wooded islands. Villages and towns are few and far between, so the area is ideal for a really special holiday experience.

Fromm Helsinki to Joensuu

After an hour’s flight from Helsinki to the tiny Joensuu airport, I picked up a hire car and set off northeast to the Thousand Lakes area. Having been warned that elks might be on the roads and that they were very stupid and, if you hit one, very solid, I kept a careful lookout but did not see any. In fact there was very little traffic of any sort.

Driving on roads that were empty but well maintained and clearly signed was a real treat. Occasionally I glimpsed a colourfully-painted timber cabin nestling between the trees, often at the edge of a lake. Apparently many Finns have holiday homes in the area.
